HISTORY OF SPORTS:
From knee length Victorian bloomers and barefeet to abbreviated shorts and running shoes - yes, Sports at Chundikuli has completed a hundred and twenty five years of progress and achievements. The Eagle has soared to great heights and brought fame at home and abroad.
The first organised sport introduced was Tennis which is still played at Chundikuli. Badminton and Tennekoit followed. By 1925 the girls had formed a Netball team and began to compete outside of Jaffna. Once the House system was introduced Annual Sports Meets and Inter House matches gave an impetus to sports. The 1930’s saw the Chundikuli girls competing in intercollegiate athletics.
By the late 1940’s, Dr Thillayampalam assessed Chundikuli needed trained Physical Instructors and identifed Jeevu Champion (Hitchcock) and sent her over to the YMCA College of Physical Education in Saidapet. Mrs. Champion returned with zest and determination to do her best and never failed in the trust placed in her. She served the school and built up sports at Chundikuli from 1950 to 1987 enabling the growth of world’s outstanding athletes such as Selvagowri Retchakan who went on to win a Silver medal for Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games 1998 and represented Britain for 400m Hurdles at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
During this period which is referred to as the “Golden Era” of sports, Chundikuli saw her girls become Champions in athletics at intercollegiate, at District Level and Nationals and brought credit in track and field events.
