Current Projects
Hostel Renovation Project
The college hostel which remained closed for 25 years during the war time, was re-opened in 2004. Despite the increase in numbers, the school continued with the existing building, which was built 68 years ago, due to other pressing needs like the renovation and expansion of classrooms until 2014-2015, when steps were taken to renovate the kitchen and the dining room of the hostel. The renovation of the other dilapidated sections of the hostel also need to be undertaken soon, as the children in the hostel need to be provided with a safe environment. This will also enable the college to provide facilities for more children to become boarders or day boarders.
125 Anniversary Fund
125 years of history calls for a joyous celebration. A thanksgiving service was held on Friday 15 January 2021, at the Grace Memorial Hall, presided by the Rt. Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo, Bishop of Colombo. All proceeds from special merchandise and events to commemorate the 125th anniversary will go towards this fund which will provide for the revival and advancement of performing - dramatics, dance and music in 2021.
Installation of Smart boards
The recent pandemic related to Covid-19 forced schools to resort to technology to continue lessons remotely, and the use of smart classrooms and technology has increased tremendously in the last few months. However, due to the limited number of smart boards, the teachers and students cannot take full advantage of the benefits provided by these devices. Moreover, the school considers this a worthy investment as these devices will continue to be used in face-to-face classrooms once normalcy returns.
Refurbishment of the Grace Hensman Memorial Hall
The Grace Hensman Memorial Hall has been the venue of many memorable performances, bringing to light the numerous talents of the Chundikuli girls over the years. However, the years have taken their toll on this iconic building, and urgent restoration is required to maintain its splendour.
Bursaries and Scholarships
Regardless of the economic challenges faced by the school, the school continues to address the needs of the community by providing free education to students from under-privileged families. 172 students from displaced families were admitted to the school in 2009 purely based on humanitarian grounds, and were provided with full bursaries with the help of our old girls and well-wishers. At present nearly 150 children from under privileged families, including 15 boarders are supported through our sponsorship programme, and several more have submitted applications for bursaries.
The college also provides scholarships to students who excel in academics and sports to encourage them, and to provide financial support students who need them.
The donations towards bursaries and scholarships can be done annually or through an endowment fund. The endowment fund will be used to create a trust fund (which can be named in memory of a loved one if the donor wishes to do so), and 90% of the interest will be used to award the bursary or scholarship, and the rest will be added to the capital. The school will provide annual reports on the progress of the beneficiary to the donor.
Memorial Prizes
Memorial prizes in the memory of a loved one could be awarded annually at the Prize Giving. This could be done by donating towards the establishment of a trust fund. 90% of the interest from the trust fund would be utilized to award the prize and 10% will be added to the capital.
Sports Fund
As an educational institution which focuses on all-round development of the students, sports has always played a crucial role in the school life of our girls. Chundikuli is proud of the illustrious sportswomen she has produced in the past, and to keep up the tradition, we need to maintain and upgrade the sports facilities available. One of the important tasks that needs to be completed within the next two years is the levelling of the playground.
