Forward be our watchward
Welcome to chundikuli girls’ college
On the 14th of Jan 1896, Mary Carter, a 27 year old British missionary, started a school for nine girls on the verandah of the Principal’s bungalow of St. John’s College, Jaffna. Her husband, the Reverend James Carter was the Principal of St.John’s College at that time. By the end of the first year there were thirty students on roll. Determined as she was, Mary Carter persuaded the Church Missionary Society of London to take the school under their wing. From there Chundikuli Girls’ College has grown to be a self-supporting school for day scholars and boarding school girls from ages 3 to 18 which is recognised by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, as a private school following the national curriculum. From inception, Chundikuli girls have been led by the vision of dedicated Principals with the firm faith “to go fearlessly along the paths of knowledge that will lead to freedom”.
New Year 2026 - Message from the Principal
Dear Students, Parents, Staff, Past pupils and well- wishers,
I wish you and your families very happy and blessed New Year.
The year 2025 concluded on a challenging note, as a significant number of families across the Island were affected by floods. While the damage was extensive and recovery is ongoing, this catastrophe also highlighted the resilience and generosity of the community, with a wide network of individuals coming together to assist those in need. I extend my gratitude to the parents, students, past pupils, and the entire school community for their contributions to the relief efforts, which enabled the college to fulfil its responsibility in supporting those affected.
The year 2026 brings its own challenges and opportunities. The school terms have been rescheduled due to public exams, requiring us to change our plans for this year.
The implementation of the new educational reforms will undoubtedly be demanding. However, we are confident that the training sessions and awareness programmes, both past and ongoing, will equip our teachers and students to successfully adapt to the new reforms.
As these educational reforms move towards greater integration of technology and the development of digital skills, they also place increased responsibility on educators and parents to guide the children in the responsible use of technology. Students must be supported in developing skills like ethical online behaviour, critical information evaluation, data privacy awareness, and healthy screen habits. Therefore, the school and parents must work collaboratively to develop responsible technology use among our children that supports learning.
In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the parents, past pupils, and well-wishers who supported the college in numerous ways in the past year. As we warmly welcome our students back for a new academic year, we look forward to working with you to ensure our children experience another fruitful year of holistic development in knowledge, character, spiritual awareness, and social responsibility.
May 2026 be a year of hope, growth and positive change for our college community.
May God bless you all.
Mrs. D. Thuseetharan
